Does Doing Your Best Still Count For Something?

Michael Johnson’s first season of Grand Slam Track has come to an abrupt—and inglorious—end.  The season was cancelled mid-way through, with athletes and venues still awaiting payment.

So… do we admire him for having a go? Or dismiss it as a failure?

Growing up, my parents were wonderfully inconsistent when it came to high performance.

Half the time they said, “We just want you to do your best and have fun!”
The other half, I’d come home with 98% on a math exam and hear, “What happened to the other 2%?”

I am  thankful for this confusing mix because it was honest.  And human.

Yes, the goal is always to succeed—but success can’t be your only metric when it comes to deciding if it was worth it.

The future is unpredictable and there is wisdom in humbly accepting there will always be an element of luck when it comes to success.

I hope Grand Slam Track finds its feet.  I hope everyone gets paid.

No matter what the outcome, I admire Michael Johnson for taking his shot with the whole world watching.
